Building the Community & Uniting Our Industry

NMI Banner

NMI is now at the end of its 11th year and we’re pleased to announce that we have significantly increased our activities and membership: At the end of 2007 we have over 130 members - up over 30% from the previous year. This is great news for the industry as it means our collective voice is stronger and louder than ever. The innovation eco-system is key and NMI lubricates the processes that drive innovation and technological development through our unique blend of  activities such as technical networking, business benchmarking, international marketing, training, education and lobbying activities. In this newsletter we’d like to tell you in brief what’s coming in 2008 and recognise the actions of companies that help to sustain a healthy industry.

We are especially grateful to all the support from members, partners and sponsors that have enabled us to deliver more products and services again this year - we are grateful to all of you.

*** A BIG THANK YOU ***

We would also like to encourage more to participate in NMI activities and provide us with feedback so we can continue to raise the bar in 2008.

We constantly review the opportunity to promote the industry and our members around the world. In November this year NMI took a promotional message to Japan and explained how our members are leading Europe in design and innovation. Further activities are currently underway to promote member companies to technology buyers and decision makers in Japan’s globally recognised brands.

We are also in the planning stages for a similar mission to USA in Q1 2008. There is further potential for greater promotional activities in the future however this is dependent on the appetite of our members and welcome support of UK Trade and Investment. If Japan, USA or China are in your strategy, please contact us so that we can include you in our plans and channel opportunities your way.

Knowledge Networking

At the heart of NMI work is Knowledge Networking. During 2007 NMI ran and partnered over 20 industry events that attracted well over 1000 attendees spanning business, design, product introduction and manufacturing themes. We were very pleased to work with the University of Glasgow to run our first international conference on the subject of CMOS variability—a subject that we expect to hear a great deal more about over the coming years. In addition to this we established the Fabless Operations Forum to improve the competiveness of the growing fabless community of companies here.

Manufacturing Update

Although conditions remain challenging our members are exploring many exciting opportunities such new product development, efficiency improvement and cost reduction. Energy and Utilities efficiency are regular focus areas for us and we aim to coordinate further cost saving initiatives in 2008. The latest fab benchmarking project is well underway and 12 sites have participated to date - a report will follow early in the New Year. We have also helped many sites with skills development this year and we fully plan to extend these activities—for example we are able to reduce training costs by pooling requirements across sites. We work with known service providers so if you are interested in reducing your training costs without compromising on quality then contact us with your areas of interest.

New Services and Membership Category

We are also rolling out a new legal assistance service and have further created a business associate membership for organisations that have a stakeholder interest in supporting a vibrant and prosperous microelectronics industry in UK and Ireland.

The 2007 Annual Review is now available and you can request a copy by calling our head office on 01506 401210 or by downloading an electronic copy from the NMI website.
