UK Power Electronics Strategy Workshop
This Workshop has now passed - to see the latest information and download your copy of the National Power Electronics strategy please follow this LINK.
BIS, through it s work with companies and stakeholders in the electronics industry, has noted the growing importance of power electronics as a driver to growth and a key enabler to the low carbon economy. Various activities are taking place to address individual issues but currently there is no coherent strategy or plan to create the right market framework to enable the sector to grow in the UK. We therefore believe that the industry would benefit from taking time now to develop a strategy to help maximise the benefits to the them and the wider economy from this opportunity and are proposing that BIS supports a project to produce and publish such a document. The timing of this activity fits well with government policy to make the low carbon economy a pillar of a rebalanced economy for the UK.
The output from this project would be a report setting-out the key challenges, barriers to growth and potential solutions for the power electronics sector. This will provide them with an evidence based framework to work together to maximise available opportunities. If we do not produce a cohesive and nationally accepted strategy for the sector the danger is that the current levels of activity would continue but at suboptimal level or not addressing the correct issues.
The main objectives of this project are to:
• Establish an industry-led strategy group
• Identify the key companies and stakeholders for power electronics in the UK
• Identify the main public and private sector opportunities for power electronics as the low carbon economy develops
• Identify and prioritise the key challenges for the sector in the UK over the next 5-10 years
• Develop recommendations and an action plan/framework for industry and government to address the challenges identified
• Produce a draft National Strategy document by next March
