Description

The Department of Electronic Engineering is one of the leading university departments in the country with strong research and teaching in all areas of modern electronic engineering.  In the last national Research Assessment  Exercise (RAE) in 2008 we submitted the largest number of staff to the Electrical and Electronic Unit of Assessment.  Given that 70% of the department's research profile was also ranked as world leading or internationally excellent, most analysts place the Department at the very top of the RAE ranking list. Similarly our teaching is also rated very highly.  Our research in the Advanced Technology Institute encompasses investigating new materials and devices for future electronics and photonics, addressing challenges in renewable energy, healthcare and information technology.  In addition our Communication Systems research group specializes in mobile and network technology and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing - one of the largest and best renowned centres in Europe, focuses on all aspects of research in image, video and audio processing.  Finally the Surrey Space Centre conducts research into cost-effective satellite engineering for affordable access to space.
