Dr. David Burrows, Chairman of NMI, Vice President of Product Management & Execution, Aptina Imaging

Picture of Professor David BurrowsAfter receiving a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a PhD on mobile radio and control theory from Bath University, Dr. Burrows joined Plessey Research in 1982 to work on radar systems using field programmable hardware, where he later later set-up the silicon engineering group to develop structured design methods and CAD tools in the areas of built-in self test and logic synthesis. He joined LSI Logic in 1988 to work on mixed signal CAD software.

In 1998 Dr. Burrows established a new R&D organisation for Micron Corporation to develop logic and mixed signal IP for its embedded memory technologies. By 2003 the department was focused on foundation IP and product design to support Micron’s CMOS imaging product range.

David now runs the UK Imaging Design Centre for Aptina, a wholly owned subsidiary of Micron and is the Chairman of the National Microelectronics Institute.

Dr. Derek Boyd, CEO, National Microelectronics Institute

Derek Boyd pictureDerek graduated in 1984 with a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and completed a Master of Business Administration in 1994. He has been with NMI since October 2001, firstly in a Business Consultant role, then as Chief Executive since April 2003. Derek has broad experience in the electronics and semiconductor industries coming from a background in Compaq, National Semiconductor and NEC. In 2010 the University of Glasgow awarded him the prestigious D.Univ for his services to the UK semiconductor industry and support for university research.

Stuart Langdon, European Facilities Director, International Rectifier

Stuart Langdon pictureStuart received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and then went on to complete an MSc in Facilities Management. He has 18 years Semiconductor experience and has held various Facilities and Management roles at Plessey Semiconductors, GEC, and Zarlink. He currently holds the position of European Facilities Director at International Rectifier, Newport, South Wales and is Chairman of IR’s world wide Facilities Council.

Steve Neill, Vice President, Bristol Design Centre and Technical Director, Infineon Technologies (UK) Ltd

Steve Neill pictureSteve graduated in electronics from Hull University in 1982 and joined the Semiconductor Components group of ICL in Kidsgrove. After joining Inmos in 1984 Steve was involved in a number of processor development projects. Steve joined Infineon Technologies (IFX) in 1999, initially responsible for a Central R&D development group focusing on processor development. Based out of the newly opened IFX Bristol Design Centre with the consolidation of activities in 2000 he took up the role as head of the design centre. Steve has now been actively involved over the last 15 years in driving six processor development projects covering a wide spectrum of performance and application.

He presently holds a seat on the IFX (UK) Board.

Patrick McNamee, Vice President of Operations,  Powervation Ltd

Patrick McNamee picture                                Patrick joined Powervation as vice president of operations in August 2008. A 25-year industry veteran, Patrick spent more than 15 years in a variety of senior management positions in the fabless semiconductor sector. He joined Powervation from Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) where he served as vice president of product engineering. Prior to that he was a product engineering manager with Dialog Semiconductor and before that, he served as principal product engineer for GEC Plessey Semiconductor. His prior experience also includes engineering positions with National Semiconductor. Patrick is a director and board member of the U.K.’s National Micro Electronic Institute. He holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in electronics from Glasgow Caledonian University, and a postgraduate diploma in advanced manufacturing systems from Brunel University.

Ivor Evans, Vice President of Product Engineering, Cambridge Silicon Radio

Ivor Evans pictureIvor joined Cambridge Silicon Radio in April 2001. He was born in London and graduated in 1984 with a B.Sc. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Sussex. He began his career at the GEC Hirst Research Centre that year working on the development of a 1.5µm silicon-on-sapphire process with emphasis on process integration and device modelling. In 1988 he left GEC to join LSI Logic Ltd as they ramped up their UK facility. In 1991 he moved on to Austrian Micro-Systems in Austria working on the modelling and specification of their mixed-signal CMOS and BICMOS technology platforms. He joined CSR in April 2001, where he is now VP of Product Engineering. Mr Evans is a member of the IEEE.

Dr. Hossein Yassaie, Chief Executive Officer, Imagination Technologies

Hossein Yassaie pictureAfter attaining his PhD in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Dr. Yassaie was a research fellow at the University of Birmingham. Prior to joining Imagination Technologies in February 1992 as the Technical Director, he was with STMicroelectronics and Inmos for 8 years, where he set up and managed the DSP and digital video Developments. During his time he was also an active member of the new video/TV International Standards Committees. Ultimately he became responsible for the system divisions, including research and development, manufacturing and marketing. After joining Imagination Hossein refocused the business on advanced technology development and created the successful Imagination’s IP business model. He became Imagination’s Chief Executive Officer in June 1998.

Professor Anthony O'Neill, Newcastle University

Anthony O'Neill pictureAnthony graduated from Nottingham University with a BSc in Physics and St Andrews University with a PhD in Semiconductor Physics. He worked for Plessey Research (Caswell) Ltd before joining Newcastle University in 1986. Since then he has built up an internationally recognised research group with research strengths in: (i) Strained Si/SiGe technology, for high speed, low power electronics; (ii) Silicon Carbide technology for high temperature and high power electronics; (iii) Interconnect reliability, in particular the study of electromigration and stressmigration. He is currently Siemens professor of microelectronics and professor of physical electronics.

In 1994 he was Visiting Scientist at the Microsystems Technology Laboratories of MIT, Cambridge USA. In 2002 He became a Royal Society Industry Fellow, with Atmel North Tyneside Ltd, UK. He is coordinating the Si Futures network of 13 leading UK universities engaged in research on Si technology.
